The first step in the history of Aarhus University was taken in hired premises on 11 September 1928, when “University Studies in Jutland” was inaugurated with 64 students enrolled. The combined staff consisted of one professor and four senior associate professors. As of 2010, Aarhus University had approximately 38,000 students and 11,000 staff members.
The characteristic yellow brick buildings in the University Park have a total area of 246,000 m2. The University also has a range of buildings in other locations in Denmark, with a total area of 59,000m2.
With only minor modifications, the building style in the University Park has remained consistent since the architects Kay Fisker, C.F. Møller and Povl Stegmann won the architectural competition in 1931. Since 1939, the architectural firm C.F. Møller has been responsible for building activities. In a harmonious interplay with the rolling hills of the park, the stylistically uniform buildings create an attractive campus which has achieved international renown.
The Sanord Symposium venue sites at Aarhus University campus are located in the Lakeside Lecture Theatres. The Lakeside Lecture Theatres opened in 2001 and hold several large auditoriums. The ceiling of the lecture theatre foyer features a piece by the major Danish Per Kirkeby.
